Finnlines : Book Ferry Tickets, Timetables & Prices
Finnlines is one of Northern Europe’s most important ferry and freight operators, connecting Finland, Sweden, Germany, and Poland across the Baltic Sea. Founded in Helsinki in 1947 and today a subsidiary of the Grimaldi Group — one of the world’s largest private shipping conglomerates — Finnlines plays a vital role in Finland’s supply chain, handling a significant share of the country’s maritime imports and exports, while also offering comfortable passenger services on its main routes.
Unlike the cruise-focused Baltic operators, Finnlines specialises in combined passenger and freight operations — a model that allows the company to offer competitive fares by maximising vessel utilisation across both markets. In 2022–2023, Finnlines introduced its new Superstar-class eco-vessels featuring wind-assisted propulsion technology — the most significant fleet investment in the company’s recent history.

Finnlines was established in Helsinki in 1947 as a freight shipping company focused on Baltic Sea cargo transport. The company introduced its first passenger services in 1962, when the car ferry MS Hansa Express opened a service linking Hanko, Finland to Travemünde, Germany — the beginning of a combined passenger-freight model that would define Finnlines’ identity.
Finnlines developed the innovative Finnflow cargo-handling system in the late 1960s and became an early adopter of roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) technology. In 2006–2007, the Italian Grimaldi Group became the sole owner of Finnlines, integrating it into a wider European and Mediterranean shipping network. Five large new ro-pax ferries were delivered between 2006 and 2007 — Finnstar, Finnmaid, Finnlady, Europalink, and Nordlink — defining the Helsinki–Travemünde route for nearly two decades.
In 2022–2023, Finnlines took delivery of three brand-new Superstar-class eco-vessels — Finnsirius, Finncanopus, and Finnvirgo — featuring wind-assisted propulsion technology and LNG-ready engines. In April 2025, Finnlines announced a further order for 3 new Superstar-class vessels for the Finland–Germany route, to be delivered between 2028 and 2030.
Finnlines operates 9 passenger-freight vessels across its Baltic Sea route network, divided between the newer Superstar-class eco-vessels and the established Finn-class ro-pax ferries.

Destinations Covered by Finnlines
Germany — Travemünde
Travemünde is the main German terminus for Finnlines and one of the most important Baltic Sea ferry ports in Northern Europe. Located on the Bay of Lübeck in Schleswig-Holstein, Travemünde is part of the historic Hanseatic city of Lübeck — a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its medieval brick architecture, the Holstentor gate, and famous marzipan. From Travemünde, the German motorway network connects directly to Hamburg (60 km), Berlin, and the rest of continental Europe.
Finland — Helsinki & Naantali
Helsinki, Finland’s capital, is served by Finnlines on the year-round overnight route from Travemünde — the most direct connection between Germany and Finland. Naantali, a small harbour town near Turku in southwestern Finland, is the arrival port for the Superstar-class vessels on the Sweden–Finland route. Both ports offer easy motorway access to the rest of Finland.
Sweden — Malmö & Kapellskär
Malmö in southern Sweden is Finnlines’ base for the Malmö–Travemünde (Germany) and the new Malmö–Świnoujście (Poland) routes. Connected to Copenhagen by the iconic Øresund Bridge, Malmö offers easy access to the rest of Scandinavia. Kapellskär, on the Stockholm archipelago, is the departure point for the Superstar-class vessels to Långnäs (Åland Islands) and Naantali (Finland).
Åland Islands — Långnäs
The Superstar-class vessels call at Långnäs on the island of Lumparland in the southern Åland archipelago. The Åland Islands are a Finnish autonomous territory with a Swedish-speaking population, a unique culture, and outstanding cycling and nature tourism. The Kapellskär–Långnäs leg takes just 3.5 hours.
Poland — Świnoujście (NEW 2025)
Finnlines launched a new daily Malmö–Świnoujście route in 2025, extending its network into Poland for the first time. Świnoujście is a Polish port city on the island of Usedom in northwestern Poland, offering easy motorway access to Szczecin, Poznań, and Warsaw — making Finnlines a direct connection between Sweden and Poland.

Finnlines — Customer Reviews & Reputation
Finnlines is consistently rated as one of the most reliable and punctual Baltic ferry operators, praised particularly for the quality of the Helsinki–Travemünde service and the innovation of its new Superstar-class eco-vessels. The company is well regarded by both leisure passengers and professional drivers who value punctuality, practicality, and competitive pricing.
What passengers praise most
The Helsinki–Travemünde route receives consistent praise for the Mare Balticum buffet restaurant — described as one of the best buffet experiences on any Baltic ferry. The 29-hour crossing is frequently praised as a genuine rest opportunity for drivers and travellers who appreciate arriving refreshed rather than exhausted after a long drive. The new Superstar-class vessels receive excellent reviews for their modern design, the visible wind-assisted sails (a genuine conversation starter), and the Höyry Spa area. The Finnish sauna is consistently highlighted as a highlight of overnight crossings. Competitive pricing versus airlines and other ferry operators is regularly cited as a practical advantage.
Areas for improvement noted by some passengers
Some passengers note that the absence of web check-in adds inconvenience compared to operators with digital boarding. Wi-Fi charges apply and connectivity can be patchy on longer open-sea stretches of the Helsinki–Travemünde route. Some passengers note that the on-board experience on the older Finn-class vessels is less modern than the new Superstar class.
Ratings & recognition
Finnlines holds strong ratings on AFerry and DirectFerries for the Finland–Germany and Sweden–Finland routes. The three Superstar-class vessels have received industry recognition for their wind-assisted propulsion technology and sustainability credentials. Finnlines participates in the Finnish Maritime Cluster’s environmental programme and is committed to reducing CO2 emissions across its fleet as part of the Grimaldi Group’s broader sustainability programme.
